Gimbal

A set of 3 gimbals, each axes represents a degree of freedom. When two gimbals align on the same plane, the entire system loses a degree of freedom

A gimbal is a pivoted support that allows the rotation of an object about a single axis. A usual set of gimbals provides the necessary rotation of the three aerodynamic degrees of freedom: yaw, roll & pitch. However, gimbal systems can be "locked" or "independent". In "locked" systems, in a term called gimbal lock, two gimbals are lined up on the same plane & the system has lost a degree of freedom.
